Who gets your super on your death?

Talking about death isn't the most cheerful topic, but the fact is it's going to happen to all of us one day.

When it does it's best for your family to be as financially prepared as possible, and one way of doing that is by nominating a beneficiary.

It's important to note that your TelstraSuper benefit doesn't automatically form part of your estate - unlike your personal assets, such as your house, property and investments. However, you can nominate who you want to receive your superannuation benefit on your death by completing a binding nomination.

If you don't have a beneficiary nomination in place, the Trustee will decide who gets your super and any benefits on your behalf.

Here's what you can do to ensure your super benefit is paid out as you wish:

Binding nomination

A valid binding death benefit nomination gives you certainty about who will receive your benefit if you die. TelstraSuper must pay your death benefit according to your wishes. Binding nominations must be updated at least every three years. TelstraSuper will advise you in writing when your binding nomination is about to expire.

Non-binding nomination

A non-binding nomination will be taken into consideration by TelstraSuper as well as your personal circumstances at the time of your death, but it’s not binding on the Trustee. This type of nomination can be made without needing to be witnessed.

Your non-binding nomination will remain constant throughout your membership of TelstraSuper, unless you elect to change it. However, it's important to keep your non-binding nomination up-to-date to reflect, among other things, your current family circumstances.

Nominating a beneficiary

  1. Decide which nomination is right for you. If you need assistance, TelstraSuper Financial Planning Advisers are here to help.
  2. Ensure you make a valid nomination. Once you know which nomination to make, check that the person/people are eligible. Remember that if you make an invalid nomination the Trustee will decide who gets your benefit.
  3. Complete the correct form. Simply fill in the form for your desired nomination and send it to us. Non-binding beneficiaries can be completed in your secure account, SuperOnline.

Circumstances can change, so you should review your nominations every three years.
