A herb garden that's mint to be!
November 18, 2020
If you love a handful of fresh chives in your mashed potatoes or a toss of fresh basil on your pizza, why not create your own windowsill herb garden?
Growing your own herbs from propagated clippings is easy to do and you’ll ensure there’s always a punch of flavour right there in your kitchen for your cooking creations.
Step 1
To get things going, simply start with leftover soft-stem herbs like basil, mint, dill, and oregano purchased from the supermarket. Note: If your tastebuds fancy rosemary, thyme, and sage with your Sunday roast, try and get your hands on some clippings straight from the garden as harder stemmed herbs tend to dry out quicker, making it difficult for them to sprout.Step 2
Once you have your herbs, simply cut away some of the leaves to expose the lower half of the herbs stem. Place the stem in an old glass jar and fill water, ensuring the leaves are not submerged and that they remain above the top of the glass to ensure adequate airflow.Step 3
Keep growing your herbs in water, refreshing it weekly.Step 4
You’ll notice sprouting in about three to four weeks, and you can start snipping it as you need. If your herbs start getting too big, consider transplanting to a pot or planting in the garden.
And there you have it—your own windowsill herb garden! Growing your own herbs is a great way to be more mindful but it will also save you money in the long run.
