How to work with someone you don't like

He’s got strong opinions and she’s got a bad work ethic—working with people you don’t like is annoying. But what can you do when a colleague’s behaviour is making your life miserable? Create change with these 3 steps.

Step 1. Try their life on for size

Life can be stressful with bad relationships, money worries, grief, and health problems. You don’t always know why a person is a horror at work but if they make you miserable just think how dismal their home life might be. It won’t make them nicer, but it will make you more understanding.

Step 2. Infect people with your niceness

Don’t be passive aggressive. Don’t gossip. Keep calm and stay professional. Pettiness has such a negative effect on a workplace but professionalism is contagious so, like a nasty winter cold, spread it around your office.

Step 3. Take a long hard look…at yourself

Ask yourself, are you the problem? If you start to recognise yourself and your own shortcomings in your nemesis then it’s time to grin and bear it and start working on your own behaviour.
