Spring into health
October 19, 2017
Spring has sprung and it’s a wonderful time of year. Summer is around the corner and warmer days are ahead.
Statistics show that 62%* of Australian adults don’t meet the recommended physical activity guidelines. Most of us are working more which means we’re moving less. When was the last time you exercised? It’s hard to fit it all in.
One of the best things about this time of year is that the days are getting longer. This means there’s more time in the day to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside can be beneficial in so many ways – not the least of which is it can be free!
Whether you're in your peak physical health or haven’t moved much for the last few months now’s a great time to get outside and collect some vitamin D while moving the body.
Here’s some ideas for getting in shape this spring.
Try out a sport
Now that the weather is improving outdoor sports become more attractive. Get a tennis racquet and hit the courts or join a team and try out a new sport. Teams can also be very social so it's a great way to meet new people. Some other popular sports are cycling and golf – and you don’t have to be in peak physical shape to try out.
Outdoor fitness groups and gyms
Every park I pass these days has a group of people working out with a trainer. These sessions look like a fun way to motivate yourself to exercise and you’re outside rather than in a stuffy gym. So get the best of both worlds and join one of these outdoor personal training groups to kick start your exercise regime. If you don’t want to join a group find a park that has gym equipment. They're popping up all around Australia and offer the same benefits of an indoor gym but with the bonus of fresh air!
Hiking
Now’s the time to hit the trails. It’s not too hot and not too cold – perfect hiking weather. There are so many to choose from all around Australia. You may need to invest in some good quality supportive footwear but the trade-off for the cost will be a fun way to get healthy. You can find local hiking options online but if you really get into it and want to create a bucket list, here are some amazing hikes around Australia.
Do a fun run
Fun runs are a great way to get motivated to start running. You can download an app like Couch to 5K to help you train and then set the fun run as your goal. Once your distance is progressed you can also try out some time park runs – these are free. You can find out about them from parkrun.com.au.
Start a walking group
If you aren’t up for running stick to walking and increase your distance every week.
Exercise is also easier with friends. Whether you're working or retired - a walking group is a great way to get fit while connecting with friends or colleagues. I love walking during my lunch hours – not only for the exercise but for the stress release it gives me. Walking lets you work through any of your problems and, if you’re with friends, you’ll also have an ear to listen.
Get up earlier
Getting up early in the spring and summer is easier because it’s lighter in the mornings. This provides a great chance to get out and get your exercise done before you get going for the day. Starting your day with exercise is known to lead to a more productive day and can also improve your mental health.
Outdoor swimming
Most outdoor pools that close over winter will be opening up soon. Swimming outside can be a very relaxing thing to do – and the benefits of swimming are endless from relieving joint pain and freeing up your muscles to clearing your head.
There are many options for getting out and doing something good for your body and soul. But don’t forget to be sun smart if when you are outside!
Give your super a spring clean
While you’re working on your physical health it’s also a great time to check in on your super. Simple steps can lead to positive outcomes. A few quick things you can do are:
- Let us find your super accounts: if you have more than one account it could be costing your money in unnecessary fees. We can find your accounts and make it easy for you to consolidate your super.
- Update your personal details: head to your SuperOnline account and make sure all your contact details are up to date.
- Check your super balance: checking on your super from time to time is important. You can also try out the retirement income projector while you’re at it and see how your super is tracking.
If you’d like to speak to someone about your super call us on 1300 033 166 or send us an online inquiry.
