TelstraSuper joins investor climate change initiative
May 14, 2020
TelstraSuper recently signed-on to Climate Action 100+ as a participant.
Climate Action 100+ is an investor initiative launched in 2017 to encourage the world’s largest corporate greenhouse gas emitters to take necessary action on climate change. More than 370 investors with over $US41 trillion in assets collectively under management are engaging companies to:
- Implement a strong governance framework
- Take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across their value chain; and
- Provide enhanced corporate disclosures on climate related matters
The initiative focuses on 160 of the world’s largest corporate greenhouse gas emitters. In Australia there are 13 companies being engaged by local asset owners and investment managers.
When signing on, TelstraSuper made the following commitment:
As an institutional investor that is a signatory to this statement, we are aware of the risks climate change presents to our portfolios and asset values in the short, medium and long term. We therefore support the Paris Agreement and the need for the world to transition to a lower carbon economy consistent with a goal of keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°Celsius above pre-industrial levels. We believe that engaging and working with companies in which we invest is consistent with our fiduciary duty and will contribute to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Chris Davies CEO said of the initiative,
“TelstraSuper is excited to be part of this global initiative. As an advocate of sustainable investment we recognise the role super funds must play in engaging with companies to shape the outcomes on key issues like climate change.
Climate Action 100+ is an important step in working with large global companies to reduce emissions.”
Being a participant in Climate Action 100+ allows the fund to be part of a global network addressing climate risks.
