Survive work when dreaming of retirement
February 20, 2018
We promise we won't give you the usual clichés like "give 110%" or "make friends with your colleagues".
1. Make more time for leisure
If you’re feeling over the five-day commute, why not see if you can work a day from home? While not all workplaces will be able to offer working from home arrangements, many will still be open to flexible hours. This could mean you can start and finish your day earlier – leaving plenty of time for your hobbies in the afternoon. Other flexible arrangements could involve job share or reducing your hours. The longer you work – even if it’s part time – the more cash you’ll have to splash in retirement.2. Get head hunted
A change is as good as a holiday and your wealth of experience makes you a great candidate for senior roles and consulting opportunities. These roles are increasingly being filled by recruiters who often rely on LinkedIn as a search tool so it’s time to update your profile. The best profiles use facts and figures to demonstrate achievements and have a professional photo. Recommendations are king in the LinkedIn world - reach out to past colleagues, managers and associates. If you want your profile to be searchable, ensure you include important key words relevant to your industry.3. Trial your dream job
Do you have a passion that has always driven you but you’ve been too busy working to do anything about it? If you’re feeling like you need a change of scenery for what may be your last hurrah in the workforce – test it out first. Want to be a personal trainer? Test it out with a friend who has always wanted to get fit. Fancy yourself as a chef? Offer to cater your colleague’s birthday party and see how you perform under pressure. Trying out your idea well help you understand if it’s really what you want to do. This could also be something you’ll do when you finish in your career so it’s a nice progression plan into working post retirement.4. Become your own boss
Starting your own business may not be as hard as it sounds. If you have a good idea, time and a bit of seed money you could start that business you’ve always dreamed about. Australians over 50 are now the fastest growing sector for entrepreneurship. So why not give your idea a go. These days with things like Facebook and simple web development tools – starting and promoting your business has never been more achievable. More and more people are starting side businesses which have the possibility to give you the freedom to work how you want and when you want.5. Make your money work harder for you
Make sure your super is working as hard as you are by checking you don’t have any rouge accounts from your various jobs over the years. If you have more than one super fund then the chances are you’ll have more than one set of fees as well as insurance policies, which can quickly chew up your super balance. Sorting this out while your money still has time to grow could make you thousands of dollars better off in retirement. It’s also a good idea to get your money together before you finish working if you want to move it into a pension. Simply provide us with consent to use your Tax File Number to search on your behalf and we’ll do the rest.6. Call us and get it sorted
