TelstraSuper supports Voice to Parliament referendum

TelstraSuper has pledged its support for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through a constitutionally enshrined Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

TelstraSuper CEO Chris Davies said that the fund recognises that opportunity that the proposed constitutional change can provide.

"This is a critical step to create a fairer and more equitable future for First Nations peoples by ensuring they are recognised and consulted on government and parliamentary decisions that impact them.

"Our support for the Voice to Parliament aligns with our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and our ongoing advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who, despite more than 30 years of compulsory super, still have poorer superannuation outcomes as well as much lower life expectancy than non- Indigenous Australians," said Mr Davies.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people also face many challenges in accessing superannuation including verification of identity, communication and literacy issues, different cultural practices and relationships, and life expectancy differences.

"As a profit-to-member fund with a strong history of valuing diversity, inclusion and equality, we believe we have a responsibility to promote reconciliation and help bridge the superannuation gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians," said Mr Davies.

In addition to the initiatives the fund is committed to as part of our RAP launched earlier this year, TelstraSuper continues to explore ways to improve equity in retirements for First Nations peoples as a member of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST) Indigenous Superannuation Working Group (ISWG).
