How to work at home and prosper

Right now, many of us are working from home, and we’ve had to shift the way we work quickly and without much preparation.

Some will find working from home a gift as they avoid long commutes and the distractions of the office, but for others it may be an isolating time with their social interactions and networks reduced.
Here’s how to make the most of this sudden adjustment.

1. Continue to dress for success

It might seem simple but getting dressed to work from home is one of the best ways to be maintain your productivity and sense of routine. You can definitely ditch the suit but make sure you look presentable as video conferencing has become the new norm.

2. Set yourself up right

Creating a designated area with a comfortable chair and good lighting will make a real difference to your day. The aim is to keep your work and home life separate so pack up at the end of the day and close the work programs on your computer, especially if the only area for your workspace is the kitchen table.

3. Recreate your commute

Your daily commute not only gets you where you need to be, but it also gives your brain time to prepare for work. So, if you read, listen to music or take a short stroll on the way to work then recreate that routine at home. And don’t forget to reinvent your commute home so you can wind down at the end of the day.

4. Don’t feed your fear

Right now, one of the biggest distractions is the news. It’s good to stay informed with COVID-19 updates, but make sure constantly checking the news is not turning you into an anxious mess.

5. Keep the conversation going

If you don’t usually work from home, then it’s easy to not realise how much communication with your community matters for both your work performance and mental health. So, check in with your manager, continue collaborating with your team and say hi to other work colleagues. And it doesn’t have to be by email; take advantage of technology and embrace the video call.
