TelstraSuper goes carbon neutral

We’re pleased to announce that Telstra Super Pty Ltd’s (TelstraSuper’s) business operations have been certified carbon neutral by Climate Active for the 2020/21 financial year.

Happy little hikers jumping with joy

Climate Active

Climate Active is an ongoing partnership between the Australian Government and Australian businesses designed to drive voluntary climate action. The brand represents Australia’s collective effort to measure, reduce, and offset carbon emissions to lessen our negative impact on the environment.

Climate Active certification is awarded to businesses that have reached a state of carbon neutrality.  To become carbon neutral TelstraSuper has:

  1. Calculated the greenhouse gas emissions generated by its business operations from activity such as electricity usage and travel;
  2. Reduced these emissions as much as possible by investing in new technology and changing the way we operate; and
  3. Offset any remaining emissions by purchasing carbon offset units.

TelstraSuper reports to Climate Active on its carbon neutral initiatives annually and has its carbon calculations independently assessed and verified in order to be certified carbon neutral.

We’re doing our part to help design a brighter future for our members

Climate change is happening right now and we need to take action. We can all do this by making simple changes in our lives to reduce our carbon emissions.

TelstraSuper’s Climate Active certification recognises our commitment to be part of the solution to climate change – for the benefit of all.

Some of the actions we’ve taken to help us reduce emissions include:

  • Moving our key business operations to a 6 Star Green Star rated building;
  • Utilising a smart lift system that groups together passengers in a way that uses less energy;
  • Providing flexibility for our workforce to operate remotely via technology, lessening the need to travel; and
  • Donating our decommissioned technology to social enterprise Pony Up for Good so it can be recycled.

Our offsets are supporting important projects around the globe

Where emissions can’t be reduced, TelstraSuper has purchased offsets to effectively ‘neutralise’ remaining emissions. These offsets are generated by projects that reduce, remove or capture carbon emissions from the atmosphere (this includes reforestation, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects).

Projects we supported via carbon offsets in 2020/21 include:

  • Winds of Change project (wind power in India)
  • Fighting Fire with Fire project (Indigenous fire management in Northern Territory)
  • Rainforest Protection (South America, Oceania and Africa)
