No one enjoys hearing they need to improve at work. Being on the receiving end of negative feedback can be confronting, but it can also be a valuable tool to monitor our performance and highlight any areas needing improvement.

Try out these 5 tips to take that negative feedback and turn it into a learning opportunity.

1. Allow yourself time to process the information.

Receiving any negative feedback is tough. Your stomach will sink, you may feel embarrassed, and you’ll no doubt be your own harshest critic—and that’s ok. Let yourself have time to process it all. If needed ask any clarifying and constructive questions.

2. Don’t rush to react or fix.

After hearing feedback that doesn’t sit right don’t launch to the defence or rush to fill the space. Take notes. Take stock. Ask for some time to think over the key points. This allows you to not react based on emotion and shows the other person that you’re listening to what they’re saying.

3. Ask for advice.

Once you’ve sat with the feedback and had time to process it, a check-in meeting can be beneficial. Come prepared to unpack the key points with the goal of formulating a plan to improve in the areas discussed. It also gives you the opportunity to respond to any points you felt may have been inaccurate. Asking for regular feedback allows you to gain confidence when hearing constructive feedback.

4. Don’t be afraid to fail

Hearing negative feedback can knock your confidence but it’s important to not let the feedback determine how you approach things in the future.
Remember the feedback is not an indication of you as a person or your capabilities. Don’t let it rock your self-confidence or your self-worth.

5. Focus on looking forward

Negative feedback is an essential part of growing professionally. Show that you’re willing to listen and implement change. Decide what the learning opportunity is, what wisdom you can learn and where there’s room for growth.
