Asking the tough questions about your twilight years

Let’s face it: nobody really likes to think about aged care.

In general, thinking about aged means thinking about getting older, not being as energetic and healthy, and everything that comes along with that. It gets even more complicated when you’re thinking about how to support a loved one through their changing care needs.

Aged care is complex and confusing. What’s more, Australia’s got a pretty unique system compared to other countries in the world. With our system, there are a few basic questions you’ll have to ask (for yourself, or a loved one) at some stage. These are:

What about a little extra support around the home?

Ageing is a slow process. The changes in our body and our abilities take time. So it’s likely that before you consider personal care or residential aged care, you’ll start thinking about getting help with the daily and weekly tasks that aren’t as easy as they used to be.

Many older Australians start by getting a little help with physically tougher tasks, like serious cleaning jobs and gardening. It’s relatively easy to organise these services privately, but it’s not always affordable. That’s where the government steps in, with the Commonwealth Home Support Programme*. This program requires an assessment of your needs, and it’s generally restricted to people aged 65 years and older. The services are subsidised, so there’s a means test too. You can get help with things like cleaning, laundry, transport, food shopping and more.

How can I be close to help, but keep my independence?

When it’s not enough to have help with daily tasks at home, you might start thinking about moving somewhere with a bit more support at hand. But home is home, and you’ve lived independently for the last 50 or 60-odd years, so moving straight into group accommodation seems a bit extreme.

There’s a bit of good news on this front; you can maintain your independence without risking your health and compromising your lifestyle. That’s what independent living facilities are for. Often integrated into the grounds of aged care homes, they’re usually cottages, townhouses or apartments with cleaning and grounds keeping provided, as well as support services like transport, recreational facilities, and staff nurses on call.

What happens when I need even more help?

In Australia there are a few different levels of residential aged care available. The one you (or a loved one) chooses will depend on the level of help they need around the clock, as well as their medical requirements. The assessment process can take a little time, so it’s important to plan ahead.
