See nature
It can be stressful being cooped up all day, so if you can, take 20 minutes and go somewhere green. Studies show that spending time in a place that provides you with a sense of nature will significantly lower your body’s cortisol levels, leaving you more relaxed*. So, whether it’s your backyard, your balcony or your plant wall, spend 20 minutes with your leafy friends.
Smell lavender
Aromatherapy has shown many wellness benefits. In fact, studies show inhaling certain fragrances alters our blood chemistry in such a way that they reduce stress levels^.
But what scents are best? Keep a lavender sachet by your pillow, try crushing some rosemary in your hand, or spray some citrus oil around the room. Any of these scents should help calm your nerves and help you unwind.
Taste chocolate
Scientists have proven what many of us have known for years. Chocolate is good for you! More specifically, eating dark chocolate with a high percentage of cacao, typically over 70 per cent, reduces stress levels . Dark chocolate is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health. Made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet. Even better, it’s not only good for stress it can also improve your health and lower your risk of heart disease**.
Feel a massage
If the stress is building, then an Indian head massage might calm you down.
• First, rub your temples with your fingertips in a gentle, circular pattern for about one minute.
• Secondly, “shampoo” the scalp. Massage the entire scalp in small circles. Begin at the temples and move toward the back of the head.
• Finish by combing the scalp. Begin with fingertips above the forehead, at the hairline, and comb over the top of the head and toward the neck and shoulders.
Listen to music
Researchers have found that listening to music at around 60 beats per minute can cause the brain to match the brainwaves present when we’re relaxed. In other words, music can relax you and relieve your stress.
Neuroscientists have even identified some of the most relaxing songs on earth. Give them a listen and decide for yourself if they have a positive effect on your stress levels.
