  1. Where's your money actually going? Go through your bank accounts and use our budget planner to see where you can save.
  2. Delay your shop. Eat only from stores in your pantry and freezer for a few days each month.
  3. Compare apples with apples. Look at the size of what you are buying and compare per 100gm.
  4. People say it all the time, but a meal plan and a shopping list really does save money.
  5. Buy in bulk. Browse supermarket websites for non-perishable specials that you need, and get shopping.
  6. Make use of the specials on the back of your supermarket docket.
  7. Shop only once a week and spend some time batch cooking.
  8. Block the drafts. You can lose 10% of the heat in your home through the windows so use curtains, and consider sealing windows with removable caulking.
  9. Drop the thermostat. Instead, dress for the weather and grab a blanket to keep you warm.
  10. Cut your hot water usage. Wash  clothes in cold water, run the dishwasher when full,  and install a low flow shower head.
  11. Take advantage of any off-peak discounts offered by your utility suppliers.
  12. Ask for a better deal with your utility, phone, internet, and insurance suppliers.
  13. Give up pay TV. Instead, watch SBS On Demand, ABC iview or simply use free to air stations.
  14. Cancel memberships for newspapers, magazines, industry groups or sports clubs.
  15. Ask for a refund for the events you weren’t able to attend because of the pandemic.
  16. Beware of scams. If it sounds too good to be true then delete the email (never ever click a link), close the door, or throw out the letter. Do some research or ring the source directly to check the validity of the offer and keep your money safe.
  17. Regularly track your expenditure so you can watch your progress and make sure to congratulate yourself for any wins.
  18. And, if you need additional help with your finances during the pandemic don't forget:
  • Your bank may be offering mortgage payment holidays and other financial assistance programs.
  • It's always the right time to think about a long-term financial plan. Either seek professional advice or write your goals down and start planning how you can achieve them.

Phew...that’s it for now. Don’t forget, If you already consider yourself King Thrifty or Queen Pennywise, then share your tips on our Facebook page or tell us and we'll  spread the word for you on Frugal Fridays.
